Senator Douye Diri

Senator Douye Diri was born on October 10, 1963, in Biseni, Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. He is an educationist by training and a politician by calling, having served in the Nigerian Senate before being elected governor.

Diri was elected Executive Governor of Bayelsa State in February 2020 following a Supreme Court ruling that resolved a disputed governorship election in his favour. He was subsequently re-elected in November 2023, securing a second term with a clear mandate.

His administration has pursued what he terms a "Prosperity Agenda" — focused on five key pillars: Agriculture and Food Security, Education, Health, Infrastructure, and what he has branded the Blue Economy — harnessing Bayelsa's unique position as Nigeria's most riverine state for economic development through fisheries, tourism, and waterway transport.

Diri has consistently championed the cause of resource control for Niger Delta states, arguing that the communities bearing the environmental cost of oil production must receive a greater share of the revenues. He has been vocal on this issue at national PDP forums and in federal-state dialogues.

Under his watch, Bayelsa has received increased attention for its cultural heritage, and his administration has supported initiatives celebrating Ijaw identity, language, and tradition — making him a natural ally of platforms like The Ijaw Project.
