Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva

Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva was born on December 5, 1967, in Twon-Brass, Bayelsa State. He received his education in Nigeria and went on to build a career that would take him to the highest levels of Nigerian political and economic governance.

Sylva served as a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives before his election as Executive Governor of Bayelsa State in 2008 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure saw infrastructure development in the young state, including road projects, health initiatives, and investments in public administration.

After his governorship, he remained active in national politics and was appointed Minister of State for Petroleum Resources in the Muhammadu Buhari administration — a portfolio of enormous significance given that Bayelsa sits above much of Nigeria's oil reserves. In this role, he engaged with international energy companies, domestic industry stakeholders, and policy discussions around Nigeria's oil sector reform.

Sylva has remained a central figure in Ijaw political identity and in Bayelsa State politics. He is regarded as one of the key voices connecting the interests of the Niger Delta to the corridors of national power in Abuja.
